Summer 1998

Bruce is working on a box set of previously unreleased outtakes. The box is first planned as a six-cd set, but is later reduced to four.

October 8 1998

Bruce appears in a London courthouse in a copyright case.

November 10 1998

The Tracks box set is released.

December 7 1998

On the first stop of a European press tour, Bruce reveals that plans are in the works for an E Street Band reunion tour.

A press release announcing the E Street Band tour is released.

December 10 1998

On the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights Bruce performs solo acoustic at an Amnesty International show in Paris, France.

February 26 1999

Bruce performs "Working on the Highway" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien before taking the house band's drummer, E Streeter Max Weinberg, back with him to New Jersey for the tour rehearsals.

March 1999

Rehearsals for the tour take place at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Steve Van Zandt is now again an official member of the band.

March 15 1999

Bruce is inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Bono of U2 gives the induction speech and Bruce himself calls the entire E Street Band onstage to share the big moment. Later that evening they perform four songs for the crowd. This is the band's first performance for an audience since September 1995.

March 18-19 1999

Bruce and the E Street Band perform two rehearsal shows at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park. These are the first public admission shows they do as the headliner since 1988. Bruce calls the shows "the rebirth of the E Street Band".
