| Svenn writes: With all due respect I hope Bruce finds a new producer who can produce his songs in a more simple way - with cleaner sound. The 'wall-of-sound'-sound that?s present on "the rising" and "Magic" is not fitting well to Bruce?s later compositions in my opinion. Bruce?s current work is more simple song-writing that needs to be sort of "stripped down"- not accoustic - but more simplistic in the instrumentation. Well, that?s just my view. |
| Eric writes: Just seen the video for "my Lucky Day" and it's a cracking song. Straightforward rocker, but very sing along, will work just great live. Still appalled by the title track though - yuk. I mean, baaaad - and the whistled solo is just the coup de grace. Hopefully "Lucky Day" is more representative. Another CD of off-cuts like the chronically weak "Devils and Dust" is not required. |

| Joe writes: Well said Gus - this is the 21st century and one of the things that we have come to adore of Bruce is his longevity and ability to roll with the times and dictate the times on occasion (criticism of The Rising must be after the 500th listen, you all thought it was the best thing in a long long time when it was released). The wall of sound can be obtrusive, but is any of Magic actually poor? No, its potentially the best album since 1987 and for those who moan of the wall of sound, get over to http://www.foxsearchlight.com/thewrestler/ and listen to this masterful song that would make even the greatest Springsteen albums even better. Stop moaning and go find Bon Jovi if you're angry, though you only make up the tiniest minority. I'll see the rest of you in the lines at the arenas further on up the road. |
| William K. Mahler writes: Pirate, globalized world? Remember FM radio when you could record a song and keep it on cassette? It's just better (according to your own beliefs) sound nowadays, oughta still be free, unless Bruce wants to pull a AC/DC and stay with one distributor, not via the internet. Even their new release made it to real Pirate Sites. For Bruce Springsteen and myself too, it's inevitable.

| William K. Mahler writes: I realize, that at least in print, Springsteen and O'Brien have a great relationship but how about Shania Twain's ex husband for a producer, Mutt Lang?
I too, would love to hear Bruce be emotional again as such in "Born To Run" but there's no point in recreating the past. Mutt Lang produced ACDC's "Back In Black", Def Leppards "Pyromania" & "Hysteria" plus most of Shanias massive selling releases such as "Up!" |

We're all gonna buy it cos we know what's inside. If that's what he's aiming for fair enough...but the cover would benefit greatly from the creepy background being taken out. Just black or white or whatever would've worked fine. Can't wait to see this in all it's blown up vinyl housing glory. |
| T.T. writes: Absolutely NO to Mutt Lange! Brendan O'Brien produced Springsteen albums sound really bad (especially The Rising and Magic), so I would take almost any other producer instead of him. But not Mutt Lange even though I love many of the records that he has produced. Just not right producer for Bruce. I would really like to hear Springsteen album produced by T. Bone Burnett (he prefers the organic "live" sound). |

| David writes: I appreciate Bruce reinventing the ESB classic sound , it is not my thing though, too huge, Beatles-Beach Boys kind of thing , which is not easy at all to put into record. I'd like to see all these whiners in the studio trying to put together and make good arrangements for a 10 piece band, IT IS NO FUCKING PIECE OF CAKE, let me tell you . Bruce hasn't been as prolific as he has been in the last 15 years since.... and the quality of work is quite good and consistent but I agree he needs to strip his sound down , also live, less people onstage , and yes, TBone in the control room, maybe Daniel Lanois would do something very interesting with Bruce's sound, or Brian Beattie (from Okkervil river) or Jeremy Backofen (from the Felice Brothers) or somebody like that not so "established" that can really bring new ideas into his music. Just my opinion of course. |

| London Rob writes: Please don't let this be true. It reminds me of a Simply Red cover from some time back (the horror, the horror). Having said that Magic was pretty ordinary as was the cover to the Seeger Sessions. All round there does apeare to have been some slip in quality control as of late, the production values on Magic, the crap sound at most of the dates on the last tour, it's been heading this way for a while. That said let's wait for the music and cross our fingers that Bruce reads a message board every now and then. |
| Elnan again writes: Rob, maybe the cover itself was ordinary for Seeger Sessions, but the whole graphic package (Cover, inlay, web page, merchandise) was pretty stunning.
But this? This is just a bad Photoshop gig, mixing the two single's images with a starry backdrop, which even has a star shining through the Moon. |
| Mike writes: Criticizing a singer's album cover is like criticizing an artist's singing ability. Enough with the tabloid journalism already. |
| MB writes: Nice work. i don't get excited about Bruce's generosity because he grossed $250 million in the past year plus so giving $1 million for example is nothing special for him. The ad is nice because it makes everyone aware but Bruce can do more then most to keep the food bank going. |
| ctuck writes: Tell 'ya what: you can either accept the fact that an artist as talented as Springsteen could take his music in a thousand different directions in a million different universes and spend your time playing "what if" or "what I'd do" or "what I'd like to hear" from now till the now till the end of time, or you can be thankful for the gift of his music and trust that his vision might be just a little sharper than yours. Not more right or wrong necessarily, but his vision nonetheless. I'm perfectly fine with letting Bruce take his music wherever his muse leads him, and thankful to be able to follow along on the journey Thank you Bruce. |
| Eric writes: It's awful. But then Bruce isn't really a great album cover specialist really, is he? It sits pretty well with the desperately dire title track really, which has to be up there near the very top of my "worst Bruce tracks ever" list. Fortunately "lucky day" seems to be a cracker, so fingers crossed it's a curate's egg with more good parts than bad. |
| Elnan writes: Always amusing to try to guess what goes on in the E Streeters' heads.
I really think that most of them would drop whatever they have in their hands and run to join Bruce for anything. I sure would, but that does not matter. (I think) In this matter, I am sure that the agreements have been made months, maybe years ago. What they are only Bruce & Max know. I sure will miss Max if he leaves, but the band could really use someone who can speed up the songs before they come to a complete stop. |
| kavana writes: Hi, you ask will the unthinkable happen regarding Max - Bruce hiring a new drummer. Don't forget that Max is the third drummer to play for the band, following Vini Lopez and Ernest Carter in that role. |
| Jerry writes: Of course Max is the third drummer, but he's been in the band for nearly 35 years. These are bad comparisons, but Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks weren't in the original Fleetwood Mac...Ringo Starr wasn't an original Beatle...but they're pretty well identified with those groups now. When you think "E Street drummer" you don't think "Ernest Carter", do you?
As far as the future, it's hard to deny it would be a major change to replace him. I think the more likely answer is Bruce touring with a group that is NOT the E Street Band but might have certain members remain. |

| goterps writes: You know, Bruce has changed my life, like many of you would also say. It's time he retires. I head New York City Serenade today and almost dies, thinking about his output recently. Jungleland is the greatest song ever written. I don't want Bruce to record songs about being a romantic 20 year old kid walking the Jersey boardwalk. I like that he has grown up, but he is now a 58-year-old content man with nothing to write about. I don't want his political views and don't want to hear a bunch of random songs that have no connection with each other. SInce The RIsing, that's what he has done. Just random 3-minute pop songs. I would love to hear the musicality from WIld& Innocaent, BTR, DOTEOT and, his greatest, The River. He got away from the music and is just spewing out songs that make no sense. I am working as a "roadie'' at the Super Bowl and am only hoping that Bruce doesn't embarrass himself. Do we want to see Bruce walking around like a bloated Elvis or an insignificant Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney? It's time to pull the plug.Let's remember the great albums when the music mattered and he wasn't just trying to string together 12 songs. I challenge anyone to come up wih one album in the since TOL that had any musicality or originality whatsoever. The greatest rocker of all time is fading to a slow death. |

O, it is not the class of album cover like Darkness, BTR but it is something new, and we are entering a era, new time, everything changes, so I'm confident come spring time and everyone has forgotten about this cover and just rocking their asses off to this very album when Bruce and the boys hit the road!!! |
| Philly writes: Bruce has shown that he is always planning for the future. If he feels Max can't make a committment to the band, he'll replace him. No hard feelings. Bruce is a showman and the show must go on. Other then when someone is sick and they can't go that night, Bruce has always has a Plan B. How he dealt with Danny's illness is a perfect example. |
| Bruce fan waiting writes: I haven't bought a Bruce album since The Rising. Bruce is too obsessed with politics and his music has suffered because of it. |
| Stanley Steamer writes: I agree. Good cover artwork, but otherwise wrong. I'm usually one who doesn't take part in the "sell out" talk and just laughs at those arguments. But taking this into account with the Super Bowl and the mediocrity of the two new singles... it's not looking well. |
| misadventure writes: Huh. Weird. It's a better tracklist than on his other Greatest Hits.
I guess if you really want to be the Working Man's artist, there's no better way to ensure that actual working men and women buy your album than to sell it at Walmart. But still! I do like the cover, though I didn't hate the Working on a Dream cover the way most everybody else seems to. |
| Walmart fan writes: I'm not sure why Bruce would do this. To partner with Walmart, usually the supplier has to jump through hoops so it's not like Bruce is getting money from Walmart to partner with them. It's not like there will be a tremendous demand for this CD. Maybe Walmart wants to increase their online store to compete with Amazon for example so they're using Bruce to attract more hits on their online store. I can't say he's selling out until I see how Walmart promotes this. The funny thing is I thought most liberals hated Walmart because they supposedly don't do the right thing for their employees and drive the competition out of business. I guess those things are forgotten now. |
| bruceman82 writes: I like the cover of the Wal Mart disc... I don't see why it is such a catastrophe. Okay, I'm European, but I do know something about WalMart... I think there are worse news than that.
According to the cover of WOAD; It is the first one for years which is not showing a typical Bruce-Coporate-Design... those brown-yellow-grey-dark colours of the last 7 or 8 albums needed to be changed, I think. Why is there so much moaning about everything? We get a new album... isn't it great? Bruce sells greatest hits over Wal Mart... okay, nothing to be ashamed of... I wanna have it! So... come on... stop moaning please, and look forward for January 27. Jesus Christ! |
