The Human Rights Now! Tour starts out at Wembley Stadium in London. Apart from Bruce, the lineup consists of Sting, Peter Gabriel, Youssour N'Dour and Tracy Chapman. Bruce and the E Street Band close the show with an 80 minute set, which they will do for most of the shows.

The Human Rights Now! Tour rolls across the world with shows in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.
October 10 1988
The tour ends with a huge show in Buenos Aires, Argentina, parts of which are later broadcast on TV worldwide. This is also the last announced show with the E Street Band until 1999.

Bruce and Julianne's divorce is official.
June-September 1989
Another club-hopping summer for Bruce, who performs at local Jersey Shore bars numerous times.
September 23 1989
Bruce celebrates his 40th birthday at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, where he dances with his mother and performs with most of the E Street Band.
October 18 1989
Bruce calls each member of the E Street Band and tells them he will be working with other musicians for his next album and that they should feel free to pursue other projects. In reality this message is considered a breakup of the band.
Fall-winter 1989
Preliminary work for a new album begins in Los Angeles. For the first time since the formation of the E Street Band, Bruce records new music with other musicians. "Trouble in Paradise" is recorded in December as is a cover of Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas", later used on an Elvis tribute album. The musicians include Jeff Porcaro, who will work with Bruce for his next album.

February 1990
Work on a new album begins for real. Apart from drummer Jeff Porcaro, Bruce is working with various session musicians and guests, but most importanly E Streeter Roy Bittan, who has been called in to help Bruce break out of a writer's block.
