Born in the USA is released. It is Bruce's most commercial album to date and it's ripped from the shelves by fans as well as many casual listeners whose first exposure to Bruce has been the "Dancing in the Dark" single.

Born in the USA goes number one on the Billboard chart. It will stay there for seven weeks and stay in the Top 10 for an incredible 85 weeks in total.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band Live 1975-85 hits the stores. The five-album live box set recaptures Bruce's career as a performing artist and is met with huge expectations.

Tunnel of Love is released. The album is a drastic turnaround for Bruce. When he could have made Born in the USA Part II and continued on the high wave he was riding on, he instead turns inward and releases 12 low-key, mature songs about love and relationships. The album sells considerably less than Born in the USA, but nonetheless goes double platinum on its first day of release and is three weeks later number one on the charts.

The Ghost of Tom Joad is released. On the same day Bruce sets out on a solo acoustic tour in small theaters. The tour begins in New Brunswick, NJ, and will continue for the rest of the year in selected US cities. In the beginning the shows are dark and gloomy, focusing on the new material and completely ignoring the old hits.

Rumors of a live release from the Reunion Tour had been circulating since before the tour even ended, and on this date the rumors become reality when the 2-CD set Live in New York City is released. Bruce himself celebrates the release by showing up at Jack's Music Store's midnight sale in Red Bank, NJ, signing copies of the album to everyone who asks. The live album is culled from the last two nights of the tour and is the soundtrack of a television special that will be shown a few days later.
