Good news for Tillie
Published 2000-10-31
New Jersey historic preservation officials have added the 113-year-old amusement arcade, The Palace, and thereby the smiling face known as Tillie, to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, and sent the nomination to the U.S. Park Service, where the Palace will be considered for the National Register. This means that the state will help with any restorations of the building if the owner so chooses. He can still have it demolished if he feels like it. The Palace has long been threatened by demolition, but a group of Bruce fans have fought to have the face, if not the whole Palace, preserved. The addition of the building to the Register of Historic Places is a step in the right direction and hopefully a sign that Tillie will continue to be among the attractions of Asbury Park.
