Bruce makes first live appearance of 2011
As has become a great habit for him, Bruce showed up at last night's Light of Day benefit show at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park. As usual, his presence hadn't been announced, but that didn't stop him from showing up and joining the usual suspects Joe Grushecky, Jesse Malin, Willie Nile and Alejandro Escovedo for a long night of great rock 'n' roll. After guesting with the three last-mentioned for one song each, Bruce took the stage for solo acoustic versions of "Your Own Worst Enemy" and "This Hard Land". Then The Houserockers filled the stage behind him and backed him and Joe Grushecky for a joint set that included Grushecky standards such as "Never Be Enough Time" and "Talking to the King" along with numerous Bruce tunes. Highlights included a fiery "Adam Raised a Cain" and the recently released Darkness outtakes "One Way Street" and "Save My Love". Bruce also had the honor of closing the show with a heartfelt "Thunder Road" sung in a low voice to allow the audience to shine on what became a very emotional sing-along.
This was, according to our files, Bruce's 9th appearance at a Light of Day benefit. The Light of Day foundation supports Parkinson's disease research and was founded by Springsteen friend and associate Bob Benjamin. You can read more on the organization's websiteat www.lightofday.org.
