"The Promise" rerecorded...

Published 1999-02-25
In a rather surprising move (to us, anyway) Bruce has, according to Backstreets, not only decided to include "The Promise" on the Tracks compilation disc, but actually rerecorded the song two weeks ago. It's surprising because it's such an old song (it was first performed live in 1976) and perhaps more important, the emotions in the song are so far detached from the Bruce we know today that a rerecording may seem awkward. Bruce's decision is no doubt based on the pressure he's been put under after leaving it off Tracks, and since he has said in interviews that he didn't have a good studio take of it, he has had no other choice but to cut a new version. This decision will no doubt cause a wild debate among fans, especially if the new version turns out inferior to the haunting live versions of the Seventies. Backstreets also reports that both "The Fever" and "Trouble River" will be on the new album. "The Fever" should be known to everybody who's reading this, whereas "Trouble River" is a Human Touch outtake with some wild guitar. It's perhaps the most rocking song Bruce did during the Human Touch sessions. There's still no exact word on when 18 Tracks will be released, but it will probably be in the final days of March or the middle of April. Here's the complete track listing courtesy of Backstreets: 1. Growin' Up 2. Seaside Bar Song 3. Rendezvous 4. Hearts of Stone 5. Where the Bands Are 6. Loose Ends 7. I Wanna Be With You 8. Born in the USA 9. My Love Will Not Let You Down 10. Lion's Den 11. Pink Cadillac 12. Janey Don't You Lose Heart 13. Sad Eyes 14. Part Man, Part Monkey 15. Trouble River (4/6/90) (418) 16.
